Abstract: The study was conducted to identify the status of goat production and problems related to goat rearing in south-west region of Bangladesh. For collection of information a pretested questionnaire was develop keeping the objectives of the study in mind. Data were collected during the period from May to June, 2014. A total of 150 goat farmers were interviewed to collect the data taking 50 at random from each upazila of Batiaghata of Khulna, Fakirhat of Bagerhat and Debhata of Satkhira districts. The socio-economic status of the farmers revealed that most of the farmers belonged to the age group 31 to 40 years (40.0%). A large number of goat farmers in the study area were illiterate (46.7%). Most of the farmers (47.3%) had short term (<5 years) experience of goat rearing. Number of goat per family was highest in Debhata (4.42±0.38) and lowest in Fakirhat (3.26±0.28) and average number was 3.77±0.18 considering all areas. The average age at first sign of heat (month) was lower in Black Bengal goat (6.27±0.10) and higher in Jamunapari (9.00±0.96) and overall value was 6.43±0.12. Average age at first kidding (month) also showed similar trends being lower in Black Bengal goat (11.30±0.15) and higher in Jamunapari (14.78±0.88) and overall value was 11.51±0.16. Average litter size was 2.07±0.08 and 1.78±0.22 for Black Bengal and Jamunapari, respectively. Average mortality percentage was highest in Debhata (1.78±0.52) and lowest in Fakirhat (0.58±0.12) and average percentage was 0.99±0.16 considering all areas. Average milk yields (ml/d) of Black Bengal and Jamunapari goat were 352.66±11.93 and 755.56±133.19, respectively. The lactation length (month) of Black Bengal and Jamunapari goats were 3.56±0.11 and 3.33±0.80, respectively. Most of the farmers stated the lack of breeding bucks, lack of artificial insemination facilities and lack of quality breeds as severe problems of goat rearing. It can be concluded from the study that the goat reared under rural condition had lower kidding age, short kidding interval and they are prolific in nature. Instead of their low milk yield it may be profitable to rear goat under rural condition.
